David is a trial attorney who was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1982. David received his B.S. degree from Hampden-Sydney College and his J.D. from the T.C. Williams School of Law of the University of Richmond. His practice includes criminal defense, personal injury, civil litigation and insurance defense.

David lives in Farmville and handles trial work statewide. He is an avid hunter, angler and a sponsor of Ducks Unlimited. David attends Johns Memorial Episcopal Church in Farmville. He is a member of the Huguenot Trail Rotary Club in Midlothian, the Farmville Chamber of Commerce, the Chesterfield County Bar Association, and the Criminal Section of the Virginia State Bar. He is married to Mary Kay Gates who serves as the Group Vice President of the Richmond YMCA.
